Earth Day in Lyme

Join us for Earth Day 2023 at the Lyme Public Hall is on Saturday, April 22. The Lyme Public Hall is marking this day by partnering with Lyme Land Trust, Lyme Pollinator Pathway and local experts and organizations to provide a wealth of helpful resources, all free to the public. The theme for this year’s national Earth Day is investing in our planet, and there will be many helpful resources at the Public Hall to help make this happen, with a focus on the local community and landscapes.

Earth Day – Three Watersheds – A Walk and Talk with Anthony Irving

Celebrate Earth Day with a talk and walk with Anthony Irving, well-known forest ecologist. He will lead the walk on the 250-acre Town of Lyme’s Johnston Preserve, which has been designated a future Old Growth Forest. Tony will explain how the varied habitats in this preserve protect the headwaters of three separate watersheds. The drainage divide of the three watersheds is the highest point in Lyme from which the waters flow in three separate directions and eventually meet the CT River. We will visit a vernal pool and learn about its significance to a healthy watershed.

Tony Irving is the Lyme Land Trust board president-elect, and chairman of the Eightmile River Wild and Scenic Committee. The Johnston Preserve was designated a future Old Growth Forest by the Old Growth Forest Network (OGFN) in 2021

Geology Walk in Gillette’s Castle State Park

Time: 1:30-3:30 pm
Place: Gillette's Castle, Lyme. Meet at the Hadlyme Public Boat Ramp parking lot by the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry, Ferry Road (Rte 148)

Join former CT State geologist Ralph Lewis on a hike through Gillette Castle State Park. Learn about the geological forces that shaped Southeastern Connecticut. He will explain how the movement of land masses millions of years ago and more recent glacier activity formed the topography of the CT River Valley in this section of Lyme.
The hike will be about two hours, moderately paced with generally easy terrain and a few short ups and downs. Sturdy shoes are a must; a walking stick would be helpful as well.
Space is limited. Register for the walk: education@lymelandtrust.org. Inclement weather will postpone the event.

The Tree Collective is a program designed to engage young conservationists ages 14-18 in outdoor fun and education while working to maintain trails in our beautiful town of Lyme, CT. It is sponsored by the Lyme Land Trust under the leadership of environmentalist/artist Regan Stacey. Each time we meet, we offer a different topic, often with a hike and trail work in a selected preserve.

April Astronomy Observing Session

Young or old, experienced or totally unfamiliar, we look forward to exposing you to our uniquely dark skies here in Lyme. The new observatory is in full motion. The Lyme Land Trust offers public viewing sessions once a month near the new moon. Our cohorts have several different telescopes that are on display for your observing pleasure, and we now are pleased to have a modern 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain housed in a permanent observatory structure.
On any given night, public sessions will be co-facilitated by one or more of our talented cohort enthusiasts:

- Parag Sahasrabudhe
- Alan Sheiness

Directions to the site and special guidance for those with heavy astronomy equipment will be provided upon registration. Park in the designated area and walk to the observing field with its amazing panoramic views of the heavens. Dress for temperatures 10-20 degrees lower than forecast for your comfort. No white lights at the field site, please.

Lymes Senior Center Take-a-Walk Wednesday with Wendy

McColluch Family Open Space – We will walk the “Tree in the Gap Trail” and into the Lay Preserve and back. This beautiful property was once a horse farm. A highlight of the hike is Rook’s Meadow and Jimmy’s Pond. 2.5 miles.
Directions: Meet at the parking lot on Whippoorwill Rd. The parking lot is on the left 0.9 miles from the intersection of Rte 1 and Whippoorwill Road.
Reservations are required. Please email sgould@oldlyme-ct.gov or call 860-434-4127 to reserve your spot. Free to Lyme’s Senior Center members. $5 for non-members.

Hikes will be lead by Wendy Hill, Open Space Coordinator of Lyme and the Vice President of Lyme Land Trust. The walks are moderate, unless otherwise noted. Bring a water bottle and dress for the weather. Wear sturdy footwear and bring a hiking stick or pole if you would like. Everyone welcome. All hikes are 2.5 to 3 miles. Inclement weather cancels the walk.
