Woodland Management

We will see the same areas that we walked through in the spring, but the area will be dressed in different colors this time! Discussion will revolve around management issues practiced over the last several years.
* deer exclosures in 2 different stages of growth
* extensive control of invasive species
* timing of mowing of fields
* tree harvesting done several years ago
* walk up to top of ridge to see new managed pitch pine plantation
This will be a walk of about two hours, pretty easy on woods roads, with some hilly spots. Lovely views.
No dogs please, older children welcome.

The Life Cycle of Beaver Activity

Come walk with us for 2-1/2 to 3 hours and we will learn as we go. Our guide Ann Kilpatrick, District Wildlife Biologist from the Department of Energy & Environmental Protection will teach us everything we want to know about beavers and more. We will enjoy examples of dams, dens, ponds and the final stages when the dam is gone and the land goes to marsh and meadow. This is a moderately rugged walk. Sturdy waterproof shoes are recommended. No dogs please.

Bats have occupied our planet for fifty million years yet we have only seriously studied them over the last six decades. With the help of a charming bat named Bugsy, we will explore the biology, ecology, sonar, cultural highs and horrific lows (White Nose Syndrome) of these extraordinary creatures. Gerri Griswold is Director of Administration and Development at the White Memorial Conservation Center in Litchfield. Over the years Gerry and her bats have presented hundreds of programs to libraries, schools and other community organizations such as the Peabody Museum and have produced a segment about bats for The Late Show with David Letterman.
We will be upstairs in a beautiful new barn. Please bring your own lawn chair and join us for a hot dogs after the program.
Annual Kayak Event

The Lyme Land Trust will be working with The Nature Conservancy to remove invasive species in a section of Hamburg Cove. The program involves a paddle though Hamburg Cove to a small island in the upper cove. An exhibition of paintings completed at Lyme Land Trustâs Clucas Field property during the second annual Paintout, will be on view in the Lyman Allyn Art Museum’s Glassenberg Gallery until July 3. The museum is open Tuesday-Saturday (lymanallyn.org). On July 7 the exhibition will move to the Lyme Art Association’s downstairs gallery, where paintings will be available for purchase. Don’t miss it!
2012 Annual Meeting

There will be a brief business meeting. Members will be asked to vote on the nominations of three candidates for Directors and the adoption of five Bylaws amendments. For details contact george.moore@lymelandtrust.org.
Susan Ballek will speak on the connection between the famous âLyme lightâ and the 19th century impressionists who lived in the area and painted landscapes now famous worldwide. On display will be paintings produced during the 2nd annual paint-out in May.

The annual meeting held at Lyme Public Hall will give members the opportunity to learn more about the Trustâs accomplishments and plans for the future. Members will be asked to vote for three new director nominees as well as some Bylaws revisions. There will be a speaker and refreshments served. Details to follow.
CT Trail Days Walks
Date: Sat June 2, 2012Time: 10:00 am
Place: Chestnut Hill Preserve. From Route 156 in Lyme turn east onto Sterling City Road. Sterling City Road is a loop. The north entrance is 4 miles south of Route 82 and the south entrance is 4 miles north of Exit 70 on I-95. Turn east again onto Sterling Hill Rd to the Chestnut Preserve sign at the entrance. Park on the right hand side of the road.

The short hike led by Lisa Niccolai will take walkers along a moderately level path to a small waterfall tumbling over ledge rock. The longer hike led by Ralph Lewis will also enter Nehantic State Forest and continue along winding more rugged trails. There will be discussions of interest to young and old alike. We will learn about the geology of the area, some history, plant and tree identification and much more. Waterproof shoes are a good idea.No dogs please.
