Brockway-Hawthorne Preserve Opening Celebration

Please join us for the opening of the Land Trust’s newest property, the Brockway-Hawthorne Preserve. This 82 acre preserve has been developed with a network of trails that traverses all the beautiful places, from Savannah-like open fields bordered by stone walls to some of the last remaining hemlock stands in Lyme. Parts of the trails meander along Whalebone Creek with wonderful rocky outcroppings and crossings on bridges built by Dominion Power Station volunteers. The trails connect with the existing system at the Ravine Trail, which in combination with Selden Creek Preserve, offers an amazing network of trails with many diverse habitats.
After the dedication, join Ralph Lewis former State of CT geologist and Tony Irving, forest ecologist for a short walk looking at the long and short-term land-use history of the preserve. We’ll see how bedrock and glacial geology shaped the land dictating how it has been worked over the centuries.
Directions: Brush Hill Road parking lot entrance is 1/2 mile south of the Hadlyme Country Store at Hadlyme Four Corners, the intersection of Rte. 82, Brush Hill Road, and Rte. 148, in Lyme. If the lot is full, park along road.

Join us to work on changing the route of the White Trail at Walbridge Woodlands led by Don Gerber and Wendolyn Hill, Lyme Land Trust board member and Open Space Coordinator for the Town of Lyme. Bring along heavy duty gloves and trimmers and weeders, pruners, and/or loppers, and rakes. If you have a light-weight power weed-wacker or pruner that you can carry along, that would be appreciated and helpful.

The Hartman Park entrance parking lot is on Gungy Road about 1.5 miles north of the 4-way stop signs at the intersection of Beaverbrook Road, Grassy Hill Road, and Gungy Road.

Trail Trimming Work Party at Eno Preserve

Join us for this moderate hike and trail trim at the Eno Preserve, led by Wendolyn Hill, Lyme Land Trust board member and Town of Lyme Open Space Coordinator. The entrance area needs clearing and we will cut back stems and saplings that are encroaching on the path as we walk, and pull up invasives if possible. Bring along heavy-duty gloves and loppers. If you have a light-weight power weed-wacker that you can carry along, that would be appreciated and helpful.

Red Trail Trimming Work Party at Jewett Preserve

Join us for a hike to trim the red trail at the Jewett Preserve, led by Wendolyn Hill, Lyme Land Trust board member and Town of Lyme Open Space Coordinator, Liz Robinson from the Nature Conservancy. It is a bit of a hike to get to the red trail. We will cut back plants and saplings that are encroaching on the path as we walk, and pull up invasives if possible. Bring along heavy-duty gloves and loppers. If you have a light-weight power weed-wacker or pruner that you can carry along, that would be appreciated and very helpful.

Celebrating Lyme’s Beauty ~ Paint-Out at Moulson Pond

The 6th Annual en plein air Paint-Out sponsored by the Lyme Land Conservation Trust and Lyme Art Association will be held again on October 7, due to unsettled weather on Saturday September 30.
The paint-out continues the tradition established by the early American Impressionists who founded the Lyme Art Colony over a hundred years ago. All plein air artists are invited to join their colleagues for a beautiful Spring weekend of outdoor painting and camaraderie.
The Red Mill at Moulson Pond, a historic landmark on the Eightmile River, is believed to be the original structure built by Duncan MacIntosh as a grist mill circa 1785. The building had almost continuous business use until it became a residence in the 1950s.
Directions: Rte. 156 to Mr. Archer Road. Continue over Bridge (Red Mill on left; Moulson Pond on right). Left after Bridge onto Honey Hill Lane.
Works created during the 2017 Paint-Out are eligible for exhibition and sale during the Celebrating Lyme’s Beauty Exhibition, to be held at the Lyme Art Association from November 10, 2017 through Januray 5, 2018.

Trailblazers walk- Patrell Preserve

Join us for this moderately easy walk in the woods at the Patrell Preserve in Lyme and East Haddam, led by Wendolyn Hill, Lyme Land Trust board member and Town of Lyme Open Space Coordinator. Everyone is welcome. The Preserve has about 3000 feet of footage along the Eightmile River and an awesome footbridge over the river!

Directions: Rt. 156 about 8 miles north from I-95 in Old Lyme to right on Baker Lane. The parking area is 1/2 mile on the left near 11 Baker’s Lane.
After the walk, join the Nature Conservancy at Ed Bill’s Former Dam on Salem Road, Lyme to remove Japanese hops growing around the newly planted trees. Meet at 10:30 to help hand pull the plants.

This week’s hike will explore the White and Yellow Trail in Mt Archer Woods/Eno Preserves, led by Wendolyn Hill, Town of Lyme Open Space Coordinator and Lyme Land Trust board member. The hike is a little more than 2 miles. Meet at the Mt Archer Woods Parking Lot.

Directions: Rt. 156 north to Mt. Archer Road. Left onto Mt Archer Road. Go one mile on Mt Archer Road (bear left up the big hill). The parking lot is down a long driveway on the left, the 4th long driveway after you start up the hill. Look for the stone post marker that has “Mt Archer Woods Town of Lyme” written on it. It faces the road, so you canât read it until you are on top of it. (If you get to 100 Mt. Archer Road, you have gone too far).

Wine, cheese, and light refreshments are included. Enjoy the camaraderie of other Lyme Land Trust members and their invitees in this beautiful setting. Binoculars (if you don’t have your own) will be provided.
Preregistration and prepayment required. The cost is $48 per person. Refreshments are included. The cruise is open to Lyme Land Conservation Trust members and their invitees only. No children under 10. The boat leaves Eagle Landing State Park in Haddam promptly at 5:00 and returns in about three hours.
If the trip is canceled because of inclement weather, refunds will be provided.
Check our website if weather is questionable. Tickets are non-refundable after September 19. After that date, if we have a waiting list, we will use our best efforts to find a buyer for your ticket(s) if you need to cancel. No-shows on cruise day are not refundable.
