Join us for this moderately easy walk in the woods. We will walk to an impressive overlook of Selden Creek and marshes with the CT River in the background. There are a few hills. Everyone is welcome.

This week’€™s hike will explore the Selden Creek Preserve led by Wendolyn Hill, Lyme Land Trust board member and Open Space Coordinator for the Town of Lyme. The hike is about 2 miles long with an option to walk longer. We will meet at the Selden Creek Preserve entrance on Joshuatown Road in Lyme.

Turtle Rock on Bald Nubble by Wendolyn Hill

This event is cancelled due to icy trail conditions. It will be rescheduled in the future.

Start the New Year off with a moderately easy 2.6 mile walk in the woods. Everyone is welcome. Don’t forget your walking stick. Meet at the trailhead to the Goodwin Trail at Hartman Park Gungy Road. We will car-pool to the Holmes Road Parking lot in East Lyme. We will then hike the portion of the Goodwin Trail from the Holmes Road Parking Lot in Nehantic State Forest through Hartman Park back to Gungy Road, led by Wendolyn Hill, Lyme Land Trust board member and Town of Lyme Open Space Coordinator. We will visit the old CCC camp foundations, pass ancient colonial ruins and pause to appreciate the view from the beloved Bald Nubble on the red trail at Hartman Park. A snack will be provided. Bring water or something to drink.

The Richard H. Goodwin Trail, overseen by the Eightmile River Wild & Scenic Coordinating Committee, is a an extended trail system crossing four towns: East Haddam, Salem, Lyme and East Lyme. In the future, the goal is to connect to other existing trail systems in surrounding towns. Dr. Richard H. Goodwin (1911-2007) was president of the Nature Conservancy from 1956 to 1958 and again from 1964 to 1966. The Nature Conservancy, a nonprofit organization, was started in 1951, and Dr. Goodwin was one of its founders. Since then, it has protected 15 million acres of land in the United States and 102 million acres in 29 other countries.

The 6th Annual Lyme Land Conservation Trust’s Celebrating Lyme’s Beauty Exhibition will be shown in the Goodman Gallery of the Lyme Art Association and will run concurrent with the LAA’s annual holiday exhibition, Deck the Walls. On exhibit will be landscapes created in September 2017 during the “Celebrating Lyme’s Beauty” Paint-Out.The Paint-Out event continues the plein air tradition established by the early American Impressionists who founded the Lyme Art Colony over a hundred years ago.

The landscapes will highlight the natural beauty of the Lyme Land Trust’s Moulson Pond. The Red Mill at Moulson Pond, a historic landmark on the Eightmile River, is believed to be the original structure built by Duncan MacIntosh as a grist mill circa 1785. The building had almost continuous business use until it became a residence in the 1950s.

This event is a fundraiser for the Lyme Land Conservation Trust, with a portion of each sale donated to the Trust to further its mission to preserve Lyme’€™s natural beauty for the public benefit.

We will explore Pleasant Valley Preserve, led by Wendolyn Hill, Lyme Land Trust board member and Town of Lyme Open Space Coordinator. The hike is a little more than 2.5 miles. This is the time of year to get a beautiful unobstructed view from the overlook at Pleasant Valley.

The orange trail is a beautiful path through the woods which leads to several remnants of historical structures. There are some rocky areas and moderate hill climbs.

The entire walk is about 3 miles long with options for short cuts. We will have a snack break halfway through. Bring water or something to drink.

Join us for a moderately easy walk at Banningwood Preserve on Tuesday, October 27 at 9:30 am. Everyone is welcome.

We will explore Banningwood Preserve led by Wendolyn Hill, Lyme Land Trust board member and Town of Lyme Open Space Coordinator. The hike is a about 2 miles. Banningwood is a beautiful preserve with meadows, mature forests, cedar groves, and dramatic rock outcroppings. Roaring Brook meanders through it.

There are a few rocky areas so don’€™t forget to bring your walking stick!

From Rt. 156 West (going north): At the end of Rte. 156, turn left onto Rte 82. At the flashing red stoplight (Hadlyme Four Corners), turn right to continue on Rte 82W (going north). The parking area is less than 1/4 mile on the right.
