August 27, 2026 Lunar Eclipse
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT– On the evening of August 28, wherever you are you can watch the moon slide into the shadow of the earth and create an almost-full lunar eclipse.
No matter where the earth sits in its orbit around the Sun, and regardless of the time of day, the sunlight hitting the earth also creates a 3D shadow behind the earth in the shape of a cone. During 2-3 full moons each year, the moon passes through this shadow on its way around the earth, and as a result, we see a darkening of the face of the moon. For this eclipse, we will see an eclipse effect by 10:33pm, with maximum eclipse at 12:12am of August 28. Then for the next few hours, the moon will exit the shadow and come back into full sunlight.
We are not planning a public session at the observatory. The best views will be naked eye anywhere that you have a clear view of the moon. For questions or comments, please contact us at astronomy@lymelandtrust.org.
