Managing Woodland Habitat Talk and Walk

Come learn about managing forest habitat for birds! A long-time resident of New England, Center Director of Audubon Sharon, and conservationist Eileen Fielding will share her passion for birds and other wildlife, and how we can manage and enhance woodland properties with birds in mind.Afterwards, forester Eric Hansen will lead a walk and offer tipson evaluating the health of woodlands and management techniques that can improve habitat.
This free event is part of a Bird Workshop Series offered by the Lyme Forest Block Conservation Project—an initiative launched by Audubon Connecticut, in partnership with the Town of Lyme and the Lyme Land Trust, the Eightmile River Wild and Scenic Coordinating Committee, The Nature Conservancy, and other local land trusts, and municipalities. Trim Tuesday Work Party at Young Preserve

Presenter: Lyme Land Conservation Trust and Town of Lyme
Join us for a Trail Trim Work Party at the Young Preserve portion of Lyme Corner Trails led by Wendolyn Hill, Lyme Land Trust director and Open Space Coordinator for the Town of Lyme and Mal Karwoski, Land Trust director. We will clear a fallen tree and trim encroaching vegetation along the trail. Bring along heavy duty gloves and light-weight trimmers, weeders, pruners, and/or loppers. Power weed wackers will be helpful. We will also be on the lookout for invasive plant species and will remove what we are able.

The Young Preserve Entrance is on the right side of Gungy Road about 0.5 miles north of the 4-way stop signs at the intersection of Beaverbrook Road, Grassy Hill Road, and Gungy Road.

Trailblazers – Walk at Ravine Trail

Watershed Management Talk and Walk

Join Pat Young and Anthony Irving as they teach us about managing property to improve the health of the watersheds that lead into Long Island Sound. As members of the Eightmile River Wild & Scenic Watershed Coordinating Committee, Pat and Anthony are passionate about the Lyme Forest Block, its watershed, and the enormous diversity of habitats that provide support for a wide variety of birds all year round. From the library, we will take a walk to a local stream and do a stream sampling of bugs. This is the sampling that is done for the DEEP which determines the health of a river by identifying what insects are found. Kid friendly.

Riverside Preserve Opening

Please join us at the opening of the Lyme Land Trust’s beautiful new Riverside Preserve. The Riverside Preserve is a 6-acre property that borders the newly restored portion of the Eightmile River by the former Ed Bill’s dam. Steve Gephard, CT DEEP Fisheries Biologist, will talk about the effect of Ed Bill’s dam removal on the health of the river ecosystem, including the migrating fish population that now has unrestricted passage to ancestral spawning areas. The preserve was donated to the Lyme Land Trust by conservationist Barbara O. David.

Bird-Friendly Communities Workshop

Join Katie Blake, Bird Friendly Communities Program Manager at Audubon Connecticut, as she teaches us how to create Bird Friendly Communities in urban, suburban, and rural places here in Connecticut. We will learn what we can do to help restore and reconnect these places, allowing all communities to provide important habitat for native birds. In turn, birds offer us a richer, more beautiful, and healthful place to live!.

Bat Presentation with Maureen Heidtmann

Join us in Diana’s Field with local librarian Maureen Heidtmann who moonlights as a bat expert and rehabilitator! This all-ages presentation will cover bat populations in Connecticut, the threats they face, and how we can help to protect them. She will also bring some of her furry flying friends with her!
Maureen Heidtmann has been working with bats for more than 25 years. She is a licensed wildlife rehabilitator and a Certified Wildlife Conservationist with the State of Connecticut’s DEEP. She has been presenting programs, chiefly about bats, for many years, including one on Long Island which drew more than 300 people. She has recently been written about in Connecticut Wildlife Magazine and several newspapers for rescuing and raising an endangered species Eastern Small-footed bat, the first of its kind to be seen in the state since 1940.
