SUMMARY:November Nights - Bats: Winged Wonders
DESCRIPTION:image: Eastern Small Footed Bat\, photo courtesy of Maureen Heidtmann. \nThis talk\, presented by Maureen Heidtmann at the Hadlyme Public Hall\, is an overview of bats of the world\, with an emphasis on our local species. Maureen will cover the myths and misconceptions about these fascinating creatures\, the many roles that bats play to ensure a healthy planet\, the perils bats face in their struggle for survival\, their amazing resilience\, and what we can do to help. \nMaureen is a licensed wildlife rehabilitator who has worked with bats for over twenty years. She also holds a Master Wildlife Conservationist certificate\, and a permit from USDA to keep non-releasable bats for educational purposes. In Connecticut\, Maureen is one of only three rehabilitators approved by DEEP to care for bats. In 2016\, she was the designated regional educator for Bat Conservation International\, and she has done voluntary fieldwork for BCI\, looking for endangered species bats with the goal of protecting their habitat. \nMaureen was featured in a Connecticut Wildlife magazine article and in several newspapers for rescuing and raising a rare endangered species\, the Eastern Small-Footed Bat (Myotis leibii)\, the first of its kind to be seen in Connecticut since 1940. DESCRIPTION:Join the East Haddam and Lyme Land Trusts for a walk with photographer Joe Standart to gain insight into picture taking. Joe will teach the techniques\, settings and editing options on a smart phone and/or SLR camera. Many of the concepts apply to all cameras. In particular at Devil’s Hopyard\,  Joe will give insight into photographing the moving water of the dramatic Chapman Falls waterfall. \nTo reserve\, a space on the walk\, email: education@lymelandtrust.org \nDirections: Meet at the Pavilion Parking Lot. SUMMARY:November Nights: Why Dark Skies Matter (Meet the Universe)
DESCRIPTION:DATE SHIFTED!! (due to weather)– On this night we take our November Nights series into the night\, literally. See the wonders of our universe— far beyond Lyme\, or our earth\, or our solar system— and explore stars\, star clusters\, nebulae and even whole galaxies\, some tens of millions of light-years away. These are the sights we cannot enjoy if excessive night lighting is allowed to proliferate. The evening will begin with a naked-eye introduction to the fall night sky followed by a guided telescopic tour. \nWe have several different telescopes that are on display including a 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain housed in a permanent observatory. Inside the observatory\, views are afforded at the eyepiece and via real-time digital enhancement. Public sessions are co-facilitated by one or more of our growing cadre of astronomy cohorts: Mark Borton\, Roger Charbonneau Jr\, Jon Dean\, Jay Drew\, Deb Fennell\, Scott Mallory\, John Natale\, Lee Polikoff\, Parag Sahasrabudhe\, Mark Strollo\, Jerry Tardif and Alan Sheiness. \nYoung or old\, experienced or totally unfamiliar\, we look forward to exposing you to our uniquely dark skies here in Lyme. And if you have a telescope\, we encourage you to bring it out. The more\, the merrier. Just follow the guidelines in the pdf you receive when you RSVP. \nPLEASE NOTE:\nUpon registration you will receive a link to directions and observing session guidelines. Bear in mind\, observing sessions involve walking in the dark on uneven terrain. You should expect to encounter patches of grass\, ruts\, exposed stone\, etc. as is common throughout Lyme’s natural landscapes. Please wear appropriate footwear and have a red-light source handy. Hiking and wandering in the local preserves\, has really given her family the safe space to let Kade run loose and has a calming effect on Quinn. Working full time\, volunteering in many organizations and finding time to enjoy the outdoors with the whole family\, can be tough\, but it is worth it! \nFor more information about the preserves and directions.

DESCRIPTION:Walk about 2.5 moderately easy miles through a variety of habitats in this 400-acre abandoned farm and quarry. Features include meadows\, the Knife Edge Trail between the Eightmile and Harris Rivers\, beaver activity\, and an ancient abandoned Pierce Arrow Car. \nDirections: Parking area is at 119 Hagen Road. Go east on Rte 82 from Lyme. Take left onto Hagen Road about 3/4 miles past Rte 11 overpass. The parking lot is 1/2 mile on the left.\nFrom Salem Roundabout\, go north on Route 85 for 1/2 mile\, then take a left onto Hagen Road. DESCRIPTION:The war continues! BURN OFF THE TURKEY with vernal pool wetland area restoration. Join or leave any time during the day. Follow the orange flags to the work site. Come join a group of volunteers led by naturalist and habitat restorer Jim Natale. \nLearn to identify and remove invasive plants to restore natural areas. Removal of barberry\, multiflora rose and other invasives in the vernal pool wetland. \nWhat to bring: Shovels\, Water\, food\, loppers\, handsaws\, pruners\, a backpack\, gloves\, work shoes\, durable clothing\, chainsaw or power pruner if you have one. \nJim Natale is owner of Wilder Gardens\, LLC\, whose mission is to establish a regional community\, the Invasive Plant Work Group\, to restore native habitat throughout the region.
