SUMMARY:Partial Solar Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:THIS POST IS INFORMATIONAL ONLY. A partial solar eclipse will occur in Lyme\, CT from 2:13p to 4:37p. Maximum coverage of the Sun by the Moon will occur at 3:27p\, at which point the Sun will be 90.3% obscured. AT NO TIME WILL IT BE SAFE TO OBSERVE THE ECLIPSE HERE IN LYME WITHOUT EYE PROTECTION! \nISO certified safety glasses may be available online at the following links. Order early\, as inventories are known to get depleted leading up to solar eclipses: \n\nhttps://www.bhphotovideo.com\nhttps://agenaastro.com\nhttps://www.highpointscientific.com\n\nYou may find specific timings and a countdown timer by zip code here: \nhttps://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/eclipse-2024/where-when/ \nFor persons interested in experimenting with photographing the eclipse\, please be aware that you MUST obtain the proper solar filter for your camera equipment\, otherwise you will permanently damage your equipment. Use the links above to find a suitable filter for your specific equipment. With a proper filter in place over the objective-end of your camera\, it will be possible to image the Sun. Expect the image scale to be virtually the same as photographing the moon\, so plan for a sufficient size lens. For scale\, take test photos of the moon. Use a tripod and get used to having to adjust the positioning of the Moon as the Earth rotates. If you like the scale\, next take photos of the Sun using the solar filter. You will find it is difficult to line up and find the Sun with the filter in place. Use the shadow of the camera on the ground to assist in lining up. For more tips\, or to troubleshoot\, write us at astronomy@lymelandtrust.org. \nCheck back here for additional information and updates. \nClear skies! \nThe Lyme Land Trust Astronomy Group aspires to inspire and pursue the advancement of knowledge of astronomy through public outreach programs including but not limited to observation events\, education programs\, and presentations about varied astronomical topics by our members and guest speakers. \nIf you like these programs and you are not currently a Lyme Land Trust Member\, please consider joining us using the green Become A Member link at the top of the LLT page.
