SUMMARY:September 19\, 2025 Astronomy Observing Session
DESCRIPTION:DATE COULD SHIFT BASED ON WEATHER– In the east\, Saturn returns to the night sky as the evening progresses. By midnight\, it is almost due south. For those with stamina\, starting at 1:09am (ie\, Saturday morning)\, the shadow of its moon Titan will take 2 1/2 hours to cross the face of the planet! Anyone who wishes to wait it out is welcome to do so. \nAs always\, if the weather goes against us\, we will move the event to the closest clear night and notify you. (But the shadow event is only at those precise times.) \nWe have several different telescopes that are on display including a 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain housed in a permanent observatory. Inside the observatory\, views are afforded at the eyepiece and via real-time digital enhancement. Public sessions are co-facilitated by one or more of our growing cadre of astronomy cohorts: Mark Borton\, Roger Charbonneau Jr\, Jon Dean\, Jay Drew\, Deb Fennell\, Scott Mallory\, John Natale\, Lee Polikoff\, Parag Sahasrabudhe\, Mark Strollo\, Jerry Tardif and Alan Sheiness. \nYoung or old\, experienced or totally unfamiliar\, we look forward to exposing you to our uniquely dark skies here in Lyme. And if you have a telescope\, we encourage you to bring it out. The more\, the merrier. Just follow the guidelines in the pdf you receive when you RSVP. \nPLEASE NOTE:\nUpon registration you will receive a link to directions and observing session guidelines. Bear in mind\, observing sessions involve walking in the dark on uneven terrain. You should expect to encounter patches of grass\, ruts\, exposed stone\, etc. as is common throughout Lyme’s natural landscapes. Please wear appropriate footwear and have a red-light source handy. For those in need\, a loaner red light will be provided at the parking and at the main observatory. \nFor questions or comments\, please contact us at astronomy@lymelandtrust.org. \nClear skies! \nPS\nIs it cloudy out? Then click here to see the full Trail 53 Astrophotography Gallery! \n\nThe Lyme Land Trust Astronomy Group aspires to inspire and pursue the advancement of knowledge of astronomy through public outreach programs including but not limited to observation events\, education programs\, and presentations about varied astronomical topics by our members and guest speakers. \nIf you like these programs and you are not currently a Lyme Land Trust Member\, please consider joining us using the green Become A Member link at the top of the LLT page.

SUMMARY:Forestry for the birds: Lyme Land Trust’s Young Forest Project Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Come and learn about the biodiversity supported by Young Forests\, including results from breeding bird surveys conducted this spring. This program is co-led by Connecticut Audubon Society’s Conservation and Education Coordinator Joe Attwater  and Lyme Land Trust’s Environmental Director Jim Arrigoni\, and is made possible with the support of the Cornell University Laboratory of Ornithology Land Trust Grants Program\n\nRegister: Jim.arrigoni@lymelandtrust.org\n\nBACKGROUND: In order to promote the survival of NEC and other species that benefit from young forest\, the Lyme Land Trust partnered with a private landowner as well as State and Federal Agencies to create young forest at Slawson Preserve\, Rabbits’ Rest\, and surrounding properties. The partners agreed to conduct three harvests of mature trees to create early successional habitat over a 10-year time period. The first harvest on 25-acres of private land was completed in the winter of 2014-15. After receiving funding from the federal NRCS EQIP program\, the Land Trust harvested about 25 acres of trees on Slawson Preserve in the winter of 2017-18. A third harvest was conducted on Nehantic State Forest land a few years after that under the direction of forester Emery Gluck. Staggering the treatments ensured that a mosaic of young brushy habitat is available over a longer period of time. Over time\, the treatments will be repeated to maintain the young forest.\nIn addition to NEC\, early successional habitat is beneficial to many species such as the prairie warbler\, eastern towhee\, indigo bunting\, American woodcock\, wood turtle\, and box turtle. Early successional forest is rare in CT because undeveloped land naturally transitions into forests of large mature trees. Historically\, young forest habitat was maintained and regenerated by fire\, storms\, and tree clearance.  Learn more about young forests and the New England Cottontail. \nFor a CT Examiner article on the project.

SUMMARY:Fall Migration Bird Walk in a Young Forest with Joe and Jim
DESCRIPTION:A rich diversity of wildlife species depends on young forests\, but this habitat type is uncommon in our region that is characterized by older woodlands. Come see and hear the difference for yourself on an expert-led bird walk at Lyme Land Trust’s Slawson and Rabbits’ Rest Preserves! While these unique preserves lack marked trails for hiking\, both have been managed to support wildlife that depends on early successional habitats like young forest. During the breeding season\, species such as Chestnut-sided Warbler\, Blue-winged Warbler\, Prairie Warbler\, Indigo Bunting\, American Woodcock\, and Eastern Towhee have been observed\, but during the autumn migration period\, we anticipate encountering a wider array of species. The species we encounter will be recorded and shared on eBird\, a community science platform for birders\, researchers\, and conservationists. \nThis program is co-led by Connecticut Audubon’s Conservation and Education Coordinator Joe Attwater  and Lyme Land Trust’s Environmental Director Jim Arrigoni\, and is made possible with the support of the Cornell University Laboratory of Ornithology Land Trust Grants Program.  \nSpace is limited and registration required. Please email Jim to register at jim.arrigoni@lymelandtrust.org. \nMeet at 478 Hamburg Road in the parking lot of Lyme Consolidated School\, where we will consolidate cars and drive three minutes to the trailhead.

SUMMARY:August Nix the Knotweed Day
DESCRIPTION:Join our work party to learn about and remove invasive knotweed and other invasive plants\, and tend the natives that have been planted in their place. Or remove knotweed in your own neighborhood. We will tend and weed Reed Landing native rain gardens\, and install some more plants at Union Triangle on the corner of Rte 156 and Old Hamburg Rd. We are in our fifth year of tackling the knotweed using the “method of 3s”: cut knotweed down to the ground and remove the plant material; 3 chops each growing season (May\, mid-July\, and mid-August). The cuttings must be carefully disposed of since each little piece will regrow into a new plant. The knotweed has been highly reduced where we have used this method but we still have to cut back the ones that persist and new ones that come up from seeds. \nBring work gloves\, clippers or loppers. We’ll provide the bags! Bring your own water bottle. Snacks will be provided.  \nPlease register: (walk-ins welcome) Openspace@townlyme.org\n \nSponsored by the Town of Lyme\, Lyme Pollinator Pathway\, and Lyme Land Trust. \nJapanese knotweed is an invasive plant which crowds out native plants that pollinators and other wildlife depend upon for survival. For a brochure on Nix the Knotweed Method of 3s.

SUMMARY:Summer Solstice Celebration - A Guided Forest Bathing Experience
DESCRIPTION:Welcome in the season of summer with a guided mindful stroll along the meadow\, river\, and forest of Pleasant Valley Preserve. Enjoy a gentle mindful movement sequence\, nature meditation\, and opportunities to connect with the natural world along the way. In honor of the summer solstice\, we’ll create a nature-inspired mandala with flowers and items collected from the forest. The session concludes with tea together. \nThe walk is about 1-mile round trip over easy to moderate terrain. \nRegistration: free\nRegister here. \nRain or shine event. Challenging weather cancels. \nForest bathing is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku – taking in the forest atmosphere. As a growing global wellness movement\, it is backed by nearly 40 years of scientific research on the holistic benefits of immersing yourself in nature. These benefits include reduced stress and blood pressure\, increased creativity and focus\, improved mood and sleep\, and a boost to immune functions.  \nRegan Stacey is an artist and advocate for the Earth whose passion is to reconnect humans to nature for personal and planetary well-being. She believes we can all awaken the forest within. She is co-founder of The Forest Therapy School\, a forest therapy guide training program. Through her private practice\, she offers forest bathing walks\, mindful nature retreats\, and mindfulness training. Regan is also the facilitator of the LLT Tree Collective\, connecting teens to nature through stewardship\, education\, and exploration.
