SUMMARY:Winter Wonders Forest Bathing - A 1.5 hr. Forest Retreat Experience
DESCRIPTION:(photo courtesy Regan Stacey) \nEnjoy a relaxing and peaceful guided forest bathing retreat that will surprise you with all that is present this time of year. \nOur mini-retreat session includes gentle mindful movement\, nature meditation\, and a slow-paced walk with opportunities to pause and connect with nature along the way. Our time together includes sharing in a warm seasonal tea among the trees at Beebe pond. The walk is about 1-mile round trip over easy to moderate terrain. \nForest bathing is inspired by the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku – taking in the forest atmosphere. As a growing global wellness movement\, it is backed by nearly 40 years of scientific research on the holistic benefits of immersing yourself in nature. These benefits include reduced stress and blood pressure\, increased creativity and focus\, improved mood and sleep\, and a boost to immune functions. In addition to the health benefits\, this practice offers a pathway of reconnection to our Earth\, restoring our relationship with the natural world for the well-being of all. \nRegistration: Sliding scale: $10 – $30 \nAges 18+. No pets please. \nRegister here. \nLLT member save 10% with code LLT10 \nRegan Stacey is a mindfulness meditation teacher and forest therapy guide whose passion is to reconnect humans to nature for personal and planetary well-being. She is founder of The Forest Therapy School\, training forest therapy guides to share this work around the world. Additionally\, she offers forest bathing walks for the local community and mindfulness in nature retreats at various spiritual retreat centers across the country. SUMMARY:November Nights: Why Dark Skies Matter (Meet the Universe)
DESCRIPTION:DATE SHIFTED!! (due to weather)– On this night we take our November Nights series into the night\, literally. See the wonders of our universe— far beyond Lyme\, or our earth\, or our solar system— and explore stars\, star clusters\, nebulae and even whole galaxies\, some tens of millions of light-years away. These are the sights we cannot enjoy if excessive night lighting is allowed to proliferate. The evening will begin with a naked-eye introduction to the fall night sky followed by a guided telescopic tour. \nWe have several different telescopes that are on display including a 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain housed in a permanent observatory. Inside the observatory\, views are afforded at the eyepiece and via real-time digital enhancement. Public sessions are co-facilitated by one or more of our growing cadre of astronomy cohorts: Mark Borton\, Roger Charbonneau Jr\, Jon Dean\, Jay Drew\, Deb Fennell\, Scott Mallory\, John Natale\, Lee Polikoff\, Parag Sahasrabudhe\, Mark Strollo\, Jerry Tardif and Alan Sheiness. \nYoung or old\, experienced or totally unfamiliar\, we look forward to exposing you to our uniquely dark skies here in Lyme. And if you have a telescope\, we encourage you to bring it out. The more\, the merrier. Just follow the guidelines in the pdf you receive when you RSVP. \nPLEASE NOTE:\nUpon registration you will receive a link to directions and observing session guidelines. Bear in mind\, observing sessions involve walking in the dark on uneven terrain. You should expect to encounter patches of grass\, ruts\, exposed stone\, etc. as is common throughout Lyme’s natural landscapes. Please wear appropriate footwear and have a red-light source handy. For those in need\, a loaner red light will be provided at the parking and at the main observatory. \nFor questions or comments\, please contact us at astronomy@lymelandtrust.org. \nClear skies! \nPS\nIs it cloudy out? Then click here to see the full Trail 53 Astrophotography Gallery! \n\nThe Lyme Land Trust Astronomy Group aspires to inspire and pursue the advancement of knowledge of astronomy through public outreach programs including but not limited to observation events\, education programs\, and presentations about varied astronomical topics by our members and guest speakers. \nIf you like these programs and you are not currently a Lyme Land Trust Member\, please consider joining us using the green Become a Member link at the top of the LLT page.

DESCRIPTION:image: Eastern Small Footed Bat\, photo courtesy of Maureen Heidtmann. \nThis talk\, presented by Maureen Heidtmann at the Hadlyme Public Hall\, is an overview of bats of the world\, with an emphasis on our local species. Maureen will cover the myths and misconceptions about these fascinating creatures\, the many roles that bats play to ensure a healthy planet\, the perils bats face in their struggle for survival\, their amazing resilience\, and what we can do to help. \nMaureen is a licensed wildlife rehabilitator who has worked with bats for over twenty years. She also holds a Master Wildlife Conservationist certificate\, and a permit from USDA to keep non-releasable bats for educational purposes. In Connecticut\, Maureen is one of only three rehabilitators approved by DEEP to care for bats. In 2016\, she was the designated regional educator for Bat Conservation International\, and she has done voluntary fieldwork for BCI\, looking for endangered species bats with the goal of protecting their habitat. \nMaureen was featured in a Connecticut Wildlife magazine article and in several newspapers for rescuing and raising a rare endangered species\, the Eastern Small-Footed Bat (Myotis leibii)\, the first of its kind to be seen in Connecticut since 1940. She also raised two Northern long-eared bat pups (Myotis septentrionalis)\, the first discovered in Connecticut in more than twelve years. \nSunday\, November 9\, 4:00 – 6:00 pm at the Hadlyme Public Hall\, 63 Ferry Rd. in Hadlyme\nRSVP: education@lymelandtrust.org \nPart of a series of events celebrating November Nights.
