SUMMARY:March 14\, 2026 Astronomy Observing Session
DESCRIPTION:Cancelled due to field conditions– \n  \nTime to start up again after the winter break; let’s hope the snow is long gone. We can still enjoy the highlights of the winter night sky with Orion and Gemini visible in the south at the session’s start. Jupiter beams brightly high in the sky with three of its four large moons visible as well. The fourth large moon\, Europa\, will peek out from behind the planet at about 9pm. \nWe have several different telescopes that are on display including a 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain housed in a permanent observatory. Inside the observatory\, views are afforded at the eyepiece and via real-time digital enhancement. Public sessions are co-facilitated by one or more of our growing cadre of astronomy cohorts: Mark Borton\, Roger Charbonneau Jr\, Jon Dean\, Jay Drew\, Deb Fennell\, Scott Mallory\, John Natale\, Lee Polikoff\, Parag Sahasrabudhe\, Mark Strollo\, Jerry Tardif and Alan Sheiness. \nYoung or old\, experienced or totally unfamiliar\, we look forward to exposing you to our uniquely dark skies here in Lyme. And if you have a telescope\, we encourage you to bring it out. The more\, the merrier. Just follow the guidelines in the pdf you receive when you RSVP. \nPLEASE NOTE:\nUpon registration you will receive a link to directions and observing session guidelines. Bear in mind\, observing sessions involve walking in the dark on uneven terrain. You should expect to encounter patches of grass\, ruts\, exposed stone\, etc. as is common throughout Lyme’s natural landscapes. Please wear appropriate footwear and have a red-light source handy. For those in need\, a loaner red light will be provided at the parking and at the main observatory. \nFor questions or comments\, please contact us at astronomy@lymelandtrust.org. \nClear skies! \nPS\nIs it cloudy out? Then click here to see the full Trail 53 Astrophotography Gallery! \n\nThe Lyme Land Trust Astronomy Group aspires to inspire and pursue the advancement of knowledge of astronomy through public outreach programs including but not limited to observation events\, education programs\, and presentations about varied astronomical topics by our members and guest speakers. \nIf you like these programs and you are not currently a Lyme Land Trust Member\, please consider joining us using the green Become A Member link at the top of the LLT page.

SUMMARY:Fishing the Local Waterways with Rowan Lytle
DESCRIPTION:Are you a fishing enthusiast? Have you always wanted to be one? Or are you just interested in the fish that are likely to be lurking in the waterways you encounter while hiking the trails of Lyme? Either way\, you’ll be interested to hear this talk focusing on our local waterways. \nLocal angler and fishing guide Rowan Lytle relies on healthy fisheries to make a living. In this presentation at the Lyme Public Hall\, he describes the history of some fisheries in and near the Lyme area\, the challenges they have faced or still face\, and what role anglers and guides can and should play in their protection\, along with the role land preservation plays in not only preserving the waterways on that very land but those nearby. He pulls from his unique perspective as both a resource stakeholder and a staunch conservationist to come to conclusions that not every fishing guide might come to. \nA registered Connecticut fishing guide\, Rowan operates both wading and canoe-based trips in central and eastern state waterways. He has been fishing ever since he can remember and an avid fly fisher since he was 14 years old. He fishes between 250 and 320 days each year\, catching over 160 different fish species on the fly. He has traveled all over the Eastern US to fish for species big and small\, and has learned how to do long fishing trips on a tight budget. \nRowan has written about fishing since 2012\, both for his own personal blog\, Connecticut Fly Angler\, and for fly fishing and outdoors print publications. He has guided\, taught fly-casting instruction\, and tied flies commercially. Rowan advocates for the protection and preservation of wild native fish and the ecosystem needed to sustain them. He was featured in a recent article in The Fisherman: https://www.thefisherman.com/article/pro-files-rowan-lytle-the-fly-rod-naturalist/ \nTo register for this talk\, please email: education@lymelandtrust.org \nThe Lyme Public Hall is at 249 Hamburg Rd. (Rt. 156) in Lyme\, CT.

SUMMARY:Coexisting with Connecticut’s Critters
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday February 11 at 7:00 pm\nAt the Lyme Public Hall\, 249 Hamburg Rd. (Rt. 156)\, Lyme CT \nRegistration: education@lymelandtrust.org \nCoexisting with Connecticut’s Critters with Master Wildlife Conservationist\, Ginny Apple\, Connecticut DEEP \nHow can we coexist safely with wildlife and minimize negative interactions in backyards and open spaces? \nIn Lyme\, we are fortunate to share the land\, water and sky with an impressive diversity of wildlife. We value protecting native wild animals and plants in their natural communities. However\, because of the fragmentation of habitats\, the risks of habituation and the movement of animals\, conflicts between humans and wildlife can and do occur. These interactions may increase as climate change shifts animal ranges and as species recover or disperse to new areas. \nHow can we move from conflict to coexistence? What tools and strategies can we employ to reduce conflicts that may arise when people and wildlife share landscapes? And can these strategies help imperiled wildlife rebound and expand to their historical ranges? \nThis discussion by Ginny Apple will help answer these questions and guide our thinking about animal encounters\, opening the path to coexistence. \nA native Texan\, Ginny Apple was one of the first full-time women sportswriters in the country\, who left the field mid-career to pursue a path in communications/public relations. Through the years she has hiked\, climbed\, kayaked\, skied and poked her way through the outdoors and developed a passion for all things natural. \nA move to the middle of the woods in Barkhamsted\, CT twenty years ago brought her into an environment filled with bears and other wildlife. Living in a house surrounded by Peoples State Forest\, she observes a large population of Black Bears and supplies field notes and photographs on them to DEEP bear biologists. Her affinity for this magnificent creature led her out west to participate in a Grizzly research mission in Montana and to become a Master Wildlife Conservationist with DEEP. She has been a Bald Eagle interpreter for the Shepaug Dam Eagle Observation area for 13 years and monitors Bald Eagle and Osprey nests throughout the State. \nGinny is Chair of the Barkhamsted Conservation Commission and also on the Town Economic Development Commission\, on the Boards of the Farmington River Watershed Association\, the Friends of American Legion and Peoples State Forests (FALPS)\, the Litchfield Hills Audubon Society\, the Northwoods Land Conservancy\, the Friends of Connecticut State Parks and she volunteers regularly with the Barkhamste

SUMMARY:Wildlife and Connecticut’s Changing Landscapes with Wildlife Biologist Ginny Apple
DESCRIPTION:With Master Wildlife Conservationist\, Ginny Apple\, Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection \nLandscapes are dynamic ecosystems\, and Connecticut’s landscape has changed through the centuries from almost completely forested in the 1600’s to cleared land by the mid-1800’s. Presently\, the state is almost 60 percent forested. What has been the impact of these dramatic changes on Connecticut’s wildlife populations\, who depend on the land for habitat? \nWith this presentation\, Ginny Apple will address that question\, starting with a brief natural history of Connecticut. She will also discuss the current state of wildlife that has been impacted by these changing landscapes\, including a discussion of major species\, factors affecting their habitats\, and some challenges we face in managing them. She will also provide suggestions for what people can do to make a difference. Several animal pelts and skulls will be on display. Questions and comments are welcome throughout and after the discussion. \nA native Texan\, Apple was one of the first full-time women sportswriters in the country\, who left the field mid-career to pursue a path in communications/public relations. Apple has been a Bald Eagle interpreter for the Shepaug Dam Eagle Observation area for 13 years and monitors Bald Eagle and Osprey nests throughout the State.\nApple is Chair of the Barkhamsted Conservation Commission and also serves on the Boards of the Farmington River Watershed Association\, the Friends of American Legion and Peoples State Forests (FALPS)\, the Litchfield Hills Audubon Society\, the Northwoods Land Conservancy\, the Friends of Connecticut State Parks and is on the Town Economic Development Commission. She volunteers regularly with the Barkhamsted Historical Society (BHS) and helps several of these organizations with their social media and website maintenance. \nRegister: education@lymelandtrust.org \n  \nBobcat photo by Kent Girty\, Imagining Lyme 2024

SUMMARY:Winter Wonders Forest Bathing - A 1.5 hr. Forest Retreat Experience
DESCRIPTION:(photo courtesy Regan Stacey) \nEnjoy a relaxing and peaceful guided forest bathing retreat that will surprise you with all that is present this time of year. \nOur mini-retreat session includes gentle mindful movement\, nature meditation\, and a slow-paced walk with opportunities to pause and connect with nature along the way. Our time together includes sharing in a warm seasonal tea among the trees at Beebe pond. The walk is about 1-mile round trip over easy to moderate terrain. \nForest bathing is inspired by the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku – taking in the forest atmosphere. As a growing global wellness movement\, it is backed by nearly 40 years of scientific research on the holistic benefits of immersing yourself in nature. These benefits include reduced stress and blood pressure\, increased creativity and focus\, improved mood and sleep\, and a boost to immune functions. In addition to the health benefits\, this practice offers a pathway of reconnection to our Earth\, restoring our relationship with the natural world for the well-being of all. \nRegistration: Sliding scale: $10 – $30 \nAges 18+. No pets please. \nRegister here. \nLLT member save 10% with code LLT10 \nRegan Stacey is a mindfulness meditation teacher and forest therapy guide whose passion is to reconnect humans to nature for personal and planetary well-being. She is founder of The Forest Therapy School\, training forest therapy guides to share this work around the world. Additionally\, she offers forest bathing walks for the local community and mindfulness in nature retreats at various spiritual retreat centers across the country.
