SUMMARY:Spring Ephemeral Walk at Ravine Trail led by  the Connecticut Botanical Society
DESCRIPTION:Followed by a stop at the Hadlyme Country Market and then an Afternoon Walk at Roaring Brook Preserve led by the Connecticut Botanical Society \nRavine Trail Walk: Join Lisa Wahle and Chris Penniman of the Connecticut Botanical Society in search of spring ephemerals on the Ravine Trail. Begin along the level white and yellow trails that traverse mature oak-hardwood forest\, passing by a vernal pool\, and proceed to the more challenging red trail as time and abilities allow. The steeper red trail is bordered by metamorphic ledges that host a mosaic of ferns\, mosses and lichens. From there we will cross the road to enter the Ravine Trail property. See map at the website link above. \nRoaring Brook Preserve Walk: For those who would like to join Lisa and Chris for another short walk after the Ravine Trail\, they will stop for a snack/lunch at the Hadlyme Country Market on the corner of Routes 82 and 148 and proceed to the Roaring Brook Preserve. This small gem offers an inclined path through red cedar and hemlock stands down to the cooling waters of the boulder-strewn Roaring Brook. On this evening\, we will observe some of each\, while also enjoying Jupiter in the western sky\, and Mars in the southern sky. \nWe have several different telescopes that are on display including a 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain housed in a permanent observatory. Inside the observatory\, views are afforded at the eyepiece and via real-time digital enhancement. Public sessions are co-facilitated by one or more of our growing cadre of astronomy cohorts: Mark Borton\, Roger Charbonneau Jr\, Jon Dean\, Jay Drew\, Deb Fennell\, Scott Mallory\, John Natale\, Lee Polikoff\, Parag Sahasrabudhe\, Mark Strollo\, Jerry Tardif and Alan Sheiness. \nYoung or old\, experienced or totally unfamiliar\, we look forward to exposing you to our uniquely dark skies here in Lyme. And if you have a telescope\, we encourage you to bring it out. The more\, the merrier. SUMMARY:Fishing the Local Waterways with Rowan Lytle
DESCRIPTION:Are you a fishing enthusiast? Have you always wanted to be one? Or are you just interested in the fish that are likely to be lurking in the waterways you encounter while hiking the trails of Lyme? Either way\, you’ll be interested to hear this talk focusing on our local waterways. \nLocal angler and fishing guide Rowan Lytle relies on healthy fisheries to make a living. In this presentation at the Lyme Public Hall\, he describes the history of some fisheries in and near the Lyme area\, the challenges they have faced or still face\, and what role anglers and guides can and should play in their protection\, along with the role land preservation plays in not only preserving the waterways on that very land but those nearby. He pulls from his unique perspective as both a resource stakeholder and a staunch conservationist to come to conclusions that not every fishing guide might come to. \nA registered Connecticut fishing guide\, Rowan operates both wading and canoe-based trips in central and eastern state waterways. He has been fishing ever since he can remember and an avid fly fisher since he was 14 years old. He fishes between 250 and 320 days each year\, catching over 160 different fish species on the fly. He has traveled all over the Eastern US to fish for species big and small\, and has learned how to do long fishing trips on a tight budget. \nRowan has written about fishing since 2012\, both for his own personal blog\, Connecticut Fly Angler\, and for fly fishing and outdoors print publications. He has guided\, taught fly-casting instruction\, and tied flies commercially. Children will learn all about the unique characteristics of the gentle\, nocturnal creatures\, their quirky characteristics and beneficial role in nature. They may be surprised to hear that U.S. Presidents have kept opossums in the White House! (Rt. 156)\, Lyme CT \nRegistration: education@lymelandtrust.org \nCoexisting with Connecticut’s Critters with Master Wildlife Conservationist\, Ginny Apple\, Connecticut DEEP \nHow can we coexist safely with wildlife and minimize negative interactions in backyards and open spaces? \nIn Lyme\, we are fortunate to share the land\, water and sky with an impressive diversity of wildlife. We value protecting native wild animals and plants in their natural communities. However\, because of the fragmentation of habitats\, the risks of habituation and the movement of animals\, conflicts between humans and wildlife can and do occur. These interactions may increase as climate change shifts animal ranges and as species recover or disperse to new areas. \nHow can we move from conflict to coexistence? What tools and strategies can we employ to reduce conflicts that may arise when people and wildlife share landscapes? And can these strategies help imperiled wildlife rebound and expand to their historical ranges? \nThis discussion by Ginny Apple will help answer these questions and guide our thinking about animal encounters\, opening the path to coexistence. \nA native Texan\, Ginny Apple was one of the first full-time women sportswriters in the country\, who left the field mid-career to pursue a path in communications/public relations. Through the years she has hiked\, climbed\, kayaked\, skied and poked her way through the outdoors and developed a passion for all things natural. \nA move to the middle of the woods in Barkhamsted\, CT twenty years ago brought her into an environment filled with bears and other wildlife. Living in a house surrounded by Peoples State Forest\, she observes a large population of Black Bears and supplies field notes and photographs on them to DEEP bear biologists. Her affinity for this magnificent creature led her out west to participate in a Grizzly research mission in Montana and to become a Master Wildlife Conservationist with DEEP. She has been a Bald Eagle interpreter for the Shepaug Dam Eagle Observation area for 13 years and monitors Bald Eagle and Osprey nests throughout the State. \nGinny is Chair of the Barkhamsted Conservation Commission and also on the Town Economic Development Commission\, on the Boards of the Farmington River Watershed Association\, the Friends of American Legion and Peoples State Forests (FALPS)\, the Litchfield Hills Audubon Society\, the Northwoods Land Conservancy\, the Friends of Connecticut State Parks and she volunteers regularly with the Barkhamste
