Find out about the effects of an artificially brightened night sky\, including the effects on natural cycles in aquatic and terrestrial life. Alan will talk about his love of astronomy and the wonder of the dark night sky unaffected by artificial light. Misha will open our eyes to the many ways light pollution affects the flora\, fauna\, and our health; and present simple site lighting design changes that can thwart impact while promoting safety. \nAlan Sheiness is founder of the Lyme Land Trust Astronomy program\, which holds regular public astronomy observing sessions. He is a promoter of dark skies and amateur astrophotographer. \nMisha Semenov-Leiva is a board member of the CT River Gateway Commission. He is Senior Architect & Sustainability Coordinator with Centerbrook Architects. I will also attempt to land the 14” telescope on Comet 144P/Kushida. SUMMARY:Meteor POP-UP Dec 13 Astronomy Session
DESCRIPTION:The Geminids peak the next two nights\, and we have a clear sky with no moon. It will be FREEZING out and meteor observing means sit in a chair\, so… bundle up\, and bring a chair. I will also place an object or two in the observatory telescope\, too\, to observe one or more planets and other objects of interest. \nThe Geminids appear to emanate from the constellation Gemini. Our Earth is plowing through a debris field left behind by the intersecting orbit of an asteroid\, 3200 Phaethon. As we plow through the debris\, the little particles burn up in our atmosphere. At this time of year\, the constellation Gemini is what is directly behind the debris field\, and hence it seems as if the meteors come from Gemini. Viewing will begin around 7:30pm\, but the later you view\, the better the show. SUMMARY:Sept 14 Make-up Session
DESCRIPTION:CARPOOL IF YOU CAN. TIGHT ON PARKING. As fall approaches\, galaxy-rich Virgo gives way to the Milky Way arching high overhead. Saturn is up at dusk\, and Jupiter rises late in the northeast. We have several different telescopes that are on display including a 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain housed in a permanent observatory. Inside the observatory\, you can watch deep sky objects grow in detail and full color on a wall-mounted monitor.
