SUMMARY:Summer Solstice Celebration - A Guided Forest Bathing Experience
DESCRIPTION:Welcome in the season of summer with a guided mindful stroll along the meadow\, river\, and forest of Pleasant Valley Preserve. Enjoy a gentle mindful movement sequence\, nature meditation\, and opportunities to connect with the natural world along the way. In honor of the summer solstice\, we’ll create a nature-inspired mandala with flowers and items collected from the forest. The session concludes with tea together. \nThe walk is about 1-mile round trip over easy to moderate terrain. \nRegistration: free\nRegister here. \nRain or shine event. Challenging weather cancels. \nForest bathing is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku – taking in the forest atmosphere. As a growing global wellness movement\, it is backed by nearly 40 years of scientific research on the holistic benefits of immersing yourself in nature. These benefits include reduced stress and blood pressure\, increased creativity and focus\, improved mood and sleep\, and a boost to immune functions.  \nRegan Stacey is an artist and advocate for the Earth whose passion is to reconnect humans to nature for personal and planetary well-being. She believes we can all awaken the forest within. She is co-founder of The Forest Therapy School\, a forest therapy guide training program. Through her private practice\, she offers forest bathing walks\, mindful nature retreats\, and mindfulness training. Regan is also the facilitator of the LLT Tree Collective\, connecting teens to nature through stewardship\, education\, and exploration. SUMMARY:November 30\, 2024 Astronomy Observing Session
DESCRIPTION:DATE COULD SHIFT BASED ON WEATHER– Sharp-eyed observers will notice the bright Venus chasing the Sun towards the sunset spot before darkness. As darkness falls\, Jupiter is rising in the east\, joining Saturn in prominence\, along with tiny Neptune and Uranus nestled in between. The Great Square of Pegasus is high overhead\, with our closest galactic neighbor the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) nearby\, as well as another wonderful galaxy\, the Triangulum Galaxy (M33)\, poised for excellent viewing. In the north\, the Big Dipper is hidden from view\, hibernating as it were for the winter below our site’s tree line. If the weather goes against us\, we will move the event to the closest clear night and notify you. \nWe have several different telescopes that are on display including a 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain housed in a permanent observatory. SUMMARY:October 25\, 2024 Astronomy Observing Session
DESCRIPTION:DATE COULD SHIFT BASED ON WEATHER– Saturn is the star tonight\, although its rings might surprise you. Owing to their tilt in space and Saturn’s movement around its orbit\, our view of the rings from Earth is becoming more and more ‘edge-on’\, which is to say we can’t see them well\, like if someone held up a playing card and you walked to the side to only see the edge. Elsewhere\, Andromeda and Pegasus are high up in the sky\, and we can enjoy the Great Andromeda Galaxy\, the Milky Way’s closest galactic neighbor. If the weather goes against us\, we will move the event to the closest clear night and notify you. \nWe have several different telescopes that are on display including a 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain housed in a permanent observatory. SUMMARY:NEW DATE: August 11\, 2024 Youth Session #2
DESCRIPTION:DATE CHANGED DUE TO CLOUD COVER- Catering to young observers. We will begin observing before dark and look at the craters and other features on the Moon. Once dark\, we will swing the telescope around to look at a handful of prominent objects that are visible despite the Moon’s presence: The Ring Nebula M57 in Lyra; The Great Globular Cluster M13 in Hercules; The Whirlpool Galaxy M51 in Canes Venatici; and a beautiful star field NGC 6871 in Cygnus the Swan. Each object has been selected for young observers because of their relative prominence in an eyepiece. \nWe have several different telescopes that are on display including a 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain housed in a permanent observatory. Inside the observatory\, you can watch deep sky objects grow in detail and full color on a wall-mounted monitor. SUMMARY:July 26\, 2024 Astronomy Observing Session
DESCRIPTION:DATE COULD SHIFT BASED ON WEATHER– The Milky Way dominates the evening sky\, rising in the south up towards the zenith and down through the northeastern horizon. Densely populated Scorpius and Sagittarius contain many dazzling targets. All the planets are below the horizon\, with Saturn rising above the tree line only after midnight. If the weather goes against us\, we will move the event to the closest clear night and notify you. \nWe have several different telescopes that are on display including a 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain housed in a permanent observatory. SUMMARY:CHANGED: Now July 14\, 2024 Youth Observing Session #1
DESCRIPTION:WEATHER EVENT. DATE CHANGED. \nCatering to the youngest observers. We will observe before dark and look at the craters and other features on the Moon. We will learn about the Moon’s phases and how its orbit around the Earth results in the phases we see. After that\, those who would like to can stay past 9:00 to view darker sky objects. \nThis session will cater to the very young since we will be working in twilight rather than full darkness. Also see Youth Observing Session #2. All are welcome to attend both sessions…every night of observing is a unique experience. \nWe have several different telescopes that are on display including a 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain housed in a permanent observatory. Inside the observatory\, you can watch deep sky objects grow in detail and full color on a wall-mounted monitor. Public sessions are co-facilitated by one or more of our growing cadre of astronomy cohorts: Mark Borton\, Roger Charbonneau Jr\, Jon Dean\, Jay Drew\, Scott Mallory\, John Natale\, Lee Polikoff\, Parag Sahasrabudhe\, Mark Strollo and Alan Sheiness. \nUpon registration you will receive a link to directions and observing session guidelines. SUMMARY:June 28\, 2024 Astronomy Observing Session
DESCRIPTION:DATE COULD SHIFT BASED ON WEATHER– This will be our latest start of the year. As Leo and Virgo head towards a western exit\, the Milky Way is now arching across the eastern horizon. SUMMARY:INFO ONLY -Planetary Parade June 4 early am
DESCRIPTION:Your news feeds might speak of a ‘planetary parade’ tonight. It is accurate that the planets will be in a relatively tight line from the sun itself at the eastern horizon just before sunrise Tuesday\, spreading out up and to the right. Of them\, Saturn will be the brightest and easiest to spot\, followed by Mars\, and a thin crescent moon. Next in line are Jupiter with Mercury nearby\, but they will be extremely hard to see owing to the Sun’s encroaching light and their closeness to the horizon itself. Neptune and Uranus will be out there\, too\, but will need a telescope to spot. \nThis post is FYI only. No event is scheduled. \nThe screenshot shown comes from Star Maps of The Sun | TheSkyLive. \n  \nClear skies! \nThe Lyme Land Trust Astronomy Group aspires to inspire and pursue the advancement of knowledge of astronomy through public outreach programs including but not limited to observation events\, education programs\, and presentations about varied astronomical topics by our members and guest speakers. \nIf you like these programs and you are not currently a Lyme Land Trust Member\, please consider joining us using the green Become A Member link at the top of the LLT page.

SUMMARY:May 3\, 2024 Astronomy Observing Session
DESCRIPTION:DATE COULD SHIFT BASED ON WEATHER– Leo and its bright star Regulus dominate the sky due south. To the right\, the Milky Way is well down the western horizon\, not to return to the night sky until later in June\, this time in the east. Arcturus climbs in the eastern sky\, and we can once again “arc from the Big Dipper’s handle to Arcturus\, and spike from there to Spica”. \nWe have several different telescopes that are on display including a 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain housed in a permanent observatory.
