DESCRIPTION:The waxing first quarter Moon will be visible at sunset\, and the Milky Way is stretching out overhead. In the east\, Cassiopeia begins to peek up above the tree line. If the weather goes against us\, we will notify you via email. \nWe have several different telescopes that are on display including a 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain housed in a permanent observatory. Inside the observatory\, views are afforded at the eyepiece and via real-time digital enhancement. Public sessions are co-facilitated by one or more of our growing cadre of astronomy cohorts: Mark Borton\, Roger Charbonneau Jr\, Jon Dean\, Jay Drew\, Deb Fennell\, Scott Mallory\, John Natale\, Lee Polikoff\, Parag Sahasrabudhe\, Mark Strollo\, Jerry Tardif and Alan Sheiness. \nYoung or old\, experienced or totally unfamiliar\, we look forward to exposing you to our uniquely dark skies here in Lyme. And if you have a telescope\, we encourage you to bring it out. The more\, the merrier. SUMMARY:August Nix the Knotweed Day
DESCRIPTION:Join our work party to learn about and remove invasive knotweed and other invasive plants\, and tend the natives that have been planted in their place. Or remove knotweed in your own neighborhood. We will tend and weed Reed Landing native rain gardens\, and install some more plants at Union Triangle on the corner of Rte 156 and Old Hamburg Rd. We are in our fifth year of tackling the knotweed using the “method of 3s”: cut knotweed down to the ground and remove the plant material; 3 chops each growing season (May\, mid-July\, and mid-August). The cuttings must be carefully disposed of since each little piece will regrow into a new plant. The knotweed has been highly reduced where we have used this method but we still have to cut back the ones that persist and new ones that come up from seeds. \nBring work gloves\, clippers or loppers. We’ll provide the bags! Hiking and wandering in the local preserves\, has really given her family the safe space to let Kade run loose and has a calming effect on Quinn. DESCRIPTION:DATE COULD SHIFT BASED ON WEATHER– Hercules and its glorious globular cluster M13 is high overhead\, while the Milky Way makes its return to the night sky along the eastern horizon. Around to the north\, the Big Dipper appears to stand on its handle. If the weather goes against us\, we will move the event to the closest clear night and notify you. \nWe have several different telescopes that are on display including a 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain housed in a permanent observatory. Inside the observatory\, views are afforded at the eyepiece and via real-time digital enhancement. SUMMARY:Summer Solstice Celebration - A Guided Forest Bathing Experience
DESCRIPTION:Welcome in the season of summer with a guided mindful stroll along the meadow\, river\, and forest of Pleasant Valley Preserve. Enjoy a gentle mindful movement sequence\, nature meditation\, and opportunities to connect with the natural world along the way. In honor of the summer solstice\, we’ll create a nature-inspired mandala with flowers and items collected from the forest. The session concludes with tea together. \nThe walk is about 1-mile round trip over easy to moderate terrain. \nRegistration: free\nRegister here. \nRain or shine event. Challenging weather cancels. \nForest bathing is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku – taking in the forest atmosphere. As a growing global wellness movement\, it is backed by nearly 40 years of scientific research on the holistic benefits of immersing yourself in nature. These benefits include reduced stress and blood pressure\, increased creativity and focus\, improved mood and sleep\, and a boost to immune functions.  \nRegan Stacey is an artist and advocate for the Earth whose passion is to reconnect humans to nature for personal and planetary well-being. We will walk along the mowed path to reach our destination\, Whale Rock\, a spectacular outcropping with views of Lord Cove and the CT River. Bring your binoculars. 1.5 miles \nPlace: John Lohmann CT River Preserve\, 33 Coult Lane\, Old Lyme CT \nDirections: Parking is along the road near 33 Coult Lane\, Old Lyme. Coult Lane is a small road on the west side of Rte 156 just south of the Lyme’Old Lyme border. From Halls Rd\, Old Lyme\, travel 2 miles north on Rte 156. take a left onto Coult Lane. The preserve is about 1/2 mile in on the right. Look for a mailbox with 33 Coult Lane on it. \nPlease Reserve.  Please email Caitlin Perkins at cperkins@oldlyme-ct.gov or call (860)434-1605 ext. 241. SUMMARY:CANCELLED - February 22\, 2025 Astronomy Observing Session
DESCRIPTION:CANCELLED DUE TO SNOW COVER. PLS SEARCH FOR ANOTHER SESSION– Bright Venus remains prominent in the west before darkness\, while Saturn grazes close to the horizon. As darkness falls\, Jupiter is high overhead in Taurus due south\, with Mars trailing behind to the left in Gemini. Orion dominates the southern sky\, with its great Orion Nebula glowing in Orion’s ‘sword’. In the north\, galaxies that live above the Big Dipper’s bowl now come into view. If the weather goes against us\, we will move the event to the closest clear night and notify you. \nWe have several different telescopes that are on display including a 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain housed in a permanent observatory. Inside the observatory\, views are afforded at the eyepiece and via real-time digital enhancement. Public sessions are co-facilitated by one or more of our growing cadre of astronomy cohorts: Mark Borton\, Roger Charbonneau Jr\, Jon Dean\, Jay Drew\, Deb Fennell\, Scott Mallory\, John Natale\, Lee Polikoff\, Parag Sahasrabudhe\, Mark Strollo\, Jerry Tardif and Alan Sheiness. \nUpon registration you will receive a link to directions and observing session guidelines. SUMMARY:February 1\, 2025 Special Winter Session - New start time
DESCRIPTION:CO-SPONSORED BY PHOEBE GRIFFIN NOYES LIBRARY– Saturn\, the Moon\, Venus\, Neptune\, Uranus\, Jupiter and Mars are all out on this winter night. In the west\, Saturn is chasing the setting Sun while Venus and Neptune straddle the crescent Moon at session’s start. Jupiter and its Great Red Spot will be in clear view. The Red Planet Mars is rising in the eastern sky. Uranus\, almost star-like\, sits just west (right) of the Pleiades cluster. In addition to the planets\, we will be able to see various star clusters and winter nebulae. Young observers welcome. \nWe have several different telescopes that are on display including a 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain housed in a permanent observatory. SUMMARY:November 30\, 2024 Astronomy Observing Session
DESCRIPTION:DATE COULD SHIFT BASED ON WEATHER– Sharp-eyed observers will notice the bright Venus chasing the Sun towards the sunset spot before darkness. As darkness falls\, Jupiter is rising in the east\, joining Saturn in prominence\, along with tiny Neptune and Uranus nestled in between. The Great Square of Pegasus is high overhead\, with our closest galactic neighbor the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) nearby\, as well as another wonderful galaxy\, the Triangulum Galaxy (M33)\, poised for excellent viewing. In the north\, the Big Dipper is hidden from view\, hibernating as it were for the winter below our site’s tree line. SUMMARY:October 25\, 2024 Astronomy Observing Session
DESCRIPTION:DATE COULD SHIFT BASED ON WEATHER– Saturn is the star tonight\, although its rings might surprise you. Owing to their tilt in space and Saturn’s movement around its orbit\, our view of the rings from Earth is becoming more and more ‘edge-on’\, which is to say we can’t see them well\, like if someone held up a playing card and you walked to the side to only see the edge. Elsewhere\, Andromeda and Pegasus are high up in the sky\, and we can enjoy the Great Andromeda Galaxy\, the Milky Way’s closest galactic neighbor.
