SUMMARY:New Year’s Day 2026 Hikes - both CANCELLED due to conditions
DESCRIPTION:Start 2026 off with a refreshing hike in the Lyme woods. The Lyme Land Trust is offering two walks this year. Register with the walk leader for the time and location you prefer. Space is limited. You may sign up for more than one walk if space and time permits. \nBOTH hikes are now cancelled due to conditions \n\nCANCELLED 10:00 am to 12:30ish pm: Pleasant Valley Preserve with Tony Irving.  Notice glacial geology and its effect on colonial agricultural practices on a moderate 3.5-mile walk with a long gentle incline to a spectacular overlook. Meet at pull-in parking lot\, Macintosh Rd\, Lyme\, about 1/4 mile west of the intersection of Macintosh road and Rte 156.\nRegister: anthonyinlyme@gmail.com\nCANCELLED due to illness – 1:30 to 3:30ish pm: Gillette’s Castle with Wendy Hill: From the Hadlyme Ferry parking lot\, we will walk a gentle climb along the walkway up to the Castle. At the top\, take in the vista from the terrace of the Castle\, and then follow the original train route\, including a very cool tunnel and round-about\, for Gillette’s small gauge railroad. Along the way\, note the unique geology and enjoy beautiful views of the Connecticut River unobstructed by leaves. About 2.5 miles.\nRegister: openspace@townlyme.org\nDirections: Meet at the Hadlyme Public Boat Ramp parking lot by the Chester-Hadlyme Ferry\, Ferry Road (Rte 148). (Note: For google maps\, search for  “Chester-Hadlyme Ferry”. Make sure GPS sends you to Ferry Road in Lyme (Rte 148)\, not Old Lyme.)\n\nFor more information about the preserves.   Everyone is welcome. End times are approximate. Allow extra time. Bring a bottle of water. Inclement weather cancels. Check for updates on the LLT website.

SUMMARY:Winter Wonders Forest Bathing - A 1.5 hr. Forest Retreat Experience
DESCRIPTION:(photo courtesy Regan Stacey) \nEnjoy a relaxing and peaceful guided forest bathing retreat that will surprise you with all that is present this time of year. \nOur mini-retreat session includes gentle mindful movement\, nature meditation\, and a slow-paced walk with opportunities to pause and connect with nature along the way. Our time together includes sharing in a warm seasonal tea among the trees at Beebe pond. The walk is about 1-mile round trip over easy to moderate terrain. \nForest bathing is inspired by the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku – taking in the forest atmosphere. As a growing global wellness movement\, it is backed by nearly 40 years of scientific research on the holistic benefits of immersing yourself in nature. These benefits include reduced stress and blood pressure\, increased creativity and focus\, improved mood and sleep\, and a boost to immune functions. In addition to the health benefits\, this practice offers a pathway of reconnection to our Earth\, restoring our relationship with the natural world for the well-being of all. \nRegistration: Sliding scale: $10 – $30 \nAges 18+. No pets please. \nRegister here. \nLLT member save 10% with code LLT10 \nRegan Stacey is a mindfulness meditation teacher and forest therapy guide whose passion is to reconnect humans to nature for personal and planetary well-being. She is founder of The Forest Therapy School\, training forest therapy guides to share this work around the world. Additionally\, she offers forest bathing walks for the local community and mindfulness in nature retreats at various spiritual retreat centers across the country. SUMMARY:Wildlife and Connecticut’s Changing Landscapes with Wildlife Biologist Ginny Apple
DESCRIPTION:With Master Wildlife Conservationist\, Ginny Apple\, Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection \nLandscapes are dynamic ecosystems\, and Connecticut’s landscape has changed through the centuries from almost completely forested in the 1600’s to cleared land by the mid-1800’s. Presently\, the state is almost 60 percent forested. What has been the impact of these dramatic changes on Connecticut’s wildlife populations\, who depend on the land for habitat? \nWith this presentation\, Ginny Apple will address that question\, starting with a brief natural history of Connecticut. She will also discuss the current state of wildlife that has been impacted by these changing landscapes\, including a discussion of major species\, factors affecting their habitats\, and some challenges we face in managing them. She will also provide suggestions for what people can do to make a difference. Several animal pelts and skulls will be on display. Questions and comments are welcome throughout and after the discussion. \nA native Texan\, Apple was one of the first full-time women sportswriters in the country\, who left the field mid-career to pursue a path in communications/public relations. Through the years she has hiked\, climbed\, kayaked\, skied and poked her way through the outdoors and developed a passion for all things natural. \nA move to the middle of the woods in Barkhamsted\, CT twenty years ago brought her into an environment filled with bears and other wildlife. Living in a house surrounded by Peoples State Forest\, she observes a large population of Black Bears and supplies field notes and photographs on them to DEEP bear biologists. Her affinity for this magnificent creature led her out west to participate in a Grizzly research mission in Montana and to become a Master Wildlife Conservationist with DEEP. Apple has been a Bald Eagle interpreter for the Shepaug Dam Eagle Observation area for 13 years and monitors Bald Eagle and Osprey nests throughout the State.\nApple is Chair of the Barkhamsted Conservation Commission and also serves on the Boards of the Farmington River Watershed Association\, the Friends of American Legion and Peoples State Forests (FALPS)\, the Litchfield Hills Audubon Society\, the Northwoods Land Conservancy\, the Friends of Connecticut State Parks and is on the Town Economic Development Commission. She volunteers regularly with the Barkhamsted Historical Society (BHS) and helps several of these organizations with their social media and website maintenance. \nRegister: education@lymelandtrust.org \n  \nBobcat photo by Kent Girty\, Imagining Lyme 2024
