SUMMARY:February 1\, 2025 Special Winter Session - New start time
DESCRIPTION:CO-SPONSORED BY PHOEBE GRIFFIN NOYES LIBRARY– Saturn\, the Moon\, Venus\, Neptune\, Uranus\, Jupiter and Mars are all out on this winter night. In the west\, Saturn is chasing the setting Sun while Venus and Neptune straddle the crescent Moon at session’s start. Jupiter and its Great Red Spot will be in clear view. The Red Planet Mars is rising in the eastern sky. Uranus\, almost star-like\, sits just west (right) of the Pleiades cluster. In addition to the planets\, we will be able to see various star clusters and winter nebulae. Young observers welcome. \nWe have several different telescopes that are on display including a 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain housed in a permanent observatory. Inside the observatory\, views are afforded at the eyepiece and via real-time digital enhancement. Public sessions are hosted by Alan Sheiness and co-facilitated by one or more of our growing cadre of experienced astronomy cohorts. \nUpon registration you will receive a link to directions and observing session guidelines. For questions or comments\, please contact us at astronomy@lymelandtrust.org. Young or old\, experienced or totally unfamiliar\, we look forward to exposing you to our uniquely dark skies here in Lyme. \n\n\nDRESS YOURSELF AND CHILDREN WARMLY. THE COLD PENETRATES AT NIGHT WHEN STANDING STILL. \nClear skies! \nPS\nIs it cloudy out? Then click here to peruse a gallery of Alan’s astrophotographs. \n\nThe Lyme Land Trust Astronomy Group aspires to inspire and pursue the advancement of knowledge of astronomy through public outreach programs including but not limited to observation events\, education programs\, and presentations about varied astronomical topics by our members and guest speakers. \nIf you like these programs and you are not currently a Lyme Land Trust Member\, please consider joining us using the green Become A Member link at the top of the LLT page.

SUMMARY:November 30\, 2024 Astronomy Observing Session
DESCRIPTION:DATE COULD SHIFT BASED ON WEATHER– Sharp-eyed observers will notice the bright Venus chasing the Sun towards the sunset spot before darkness. As darkness falls\, Jupiter is rising in the east\, joining Saturn in prominence\, along with tiny Neptune and Uranus nestled in between. The Great Square of Pegasus is high overhead\, with our closest galactic neighbor the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) nearby\, as well as another wonderful galaxy\, the Triangulum Galaxy (M33)\, poised for excellent viewing. In the north\, the Big Dipper is hidden from view\, hibernating as it were for the winter below our site’s tree line. If the weather goes against us\, we will move the event to the closest clear night and notify you. \nWe have several different telescopes that are on display including a 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain housed in a permanent observatory. Inside the observatory\, you can watch deep sky objects grow in detail and full color on a wall-mounted monitor. Public sessions are co-facilitated by one or more of our growing cadre of astronomy cohorts: Mark Borton\, Roger Charbonneau Jr\, Jon Dean\, Jay Drew\, Scott Mallory\, John Natale\, Lee Polikoff\, Parag Sahasrabudhe\, Mark Strollo and Alan Sheiness. \nUpon registration you will receive a link to directions and observing session guidelines. For questions or comments\, please contact us at astronomy@lymelandtrust.org. SUMMARY:October 25\, 2024 Astronomy Observing Session
DESCRIPTION:DATE COULD SHIFT BASED ON WEATHER– Saturn is the star tonight\, although its rings might surprise you. Owing to their tilt in space and Saturn’s movement around its orbit\, our view of the rings from Earth is becoming more and more ‘edge-on’\, which is to say we can’t see them well\, like if someone held up a playing card and you walked to the side to only see the edge. Elsewhere\, Andromeda and Pegasus are high up in the sky\, and we can enjoy the Great Andromeda Galaxy\, the Milky Way’s closest galactic neighbor. If the weather goes against us\, we will move the event to the closest clear night and notify you. \nWe have several different telescopes that are on display including a 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain housed in a permanent observatory. SUMMARY:CHANGED: Now July 14\, 2024 Youth Observing Session #1
DESCRIPTION:WEATHER EVENT. DATE CHANGED. \nCatering to the youngest observers. We will observe before dark and look at the craters and other features on the Moon. We will learn about the Moon’s phases and how its orbit around the Earth results in the phases we see. After that\, those who would like to can stay past 9:00 to view darker sky objects. Once dark\, we will swing the telescope around to look at a handful of prominent objects that are visible despite the Moon’s presence: The Ring Nebula M57 in Lyra; The Great Globular Cluster M13 in Hercules; The Whirlpool Galaxy M51 in Canes Venatici; and a beautiful star field NGC 6871 in Cygnus the Swan. Each object has been selected for young observers because of their relative prominence in an eyepiece. \nThis session will cater to the very young since we will be working in twilight rather than full darkness. Also see Youth Observing Session #2. All are welcome to attend both sessions…every night of observing is a unique experience. SUMMARY:INFO ONLY -Planetary Parade June 4 early am
DESCRIPTION:Your news feeds might speak of a ‘planetary parade’ tonight. It is accurate that the planets will be in a relatively tight line from the sun itself at the eastern horizon just before sunrise Tuesday\, spreading out up and to the right. Of them\, Saturn will be the brightest and easiest to spot\, followed by Mars\, and a thin crescent moon. Next in line are Jupiter with Mercury nearby\, but they will be extremely hard to see owing to the Sun’s encroaching light and their closeness to the horizon itself. Neptune and Uranus will be out there\, too\, but will need a telescope to spot. \nThis post is FYI only. No event is scheduled. \nThe screenshot shown comes from Star Maps of The Sun | TheSkyLive. \n  \nClear skies! \nThe Lyme Land Trust Astronomy Group aspires to inspire and pursue the advancement of knowledge of astronomy through public outreach programs including but not limited to observation events\, education programs\, and presentations about varied astronomical topics by our members and guest speakers. \nIf you like these programs and you are not currently a Lyme Land Trust Member\, please consider joining us using the green Become A Member link at the top of the LLT page.

SUMMARY:May 3\, 2024 Astronomy Observing Session
DESCRIPTION:DATE COULD SHIFT BASED ON WEATHER– Leo and its bright star Regulus dominate the sky due south. To the right\, the Milky Way is well down the western horizon\, not to return to the night sky until later in June\, this time in the east. SUMMARY:Partial Solar Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:THIS POST IS INFORMATIONAL ONLY. A partial solar eclipse will occur in Lyme\, CT from 2:13p to 4:37p. Maximum coverage of the Sun by the Moon will occur at 3:27p\, at which point the Sun will be 90.3% obscured. AT NO TIME WILL IT BE SAFE TO OBSERVE THE ECLIPSE HERE IN LYME WITHOUT EYE PROTECTION! \nISO certified safety glasses may be available online at the following links. Order early\, as inventories are known to get depleted leading up to solar eclipses: \n\nhttps://www.bhphotovideo.com\nhttps://agenaastro.com\nhttps://www.highpointscientific.com\n\nYou may find specific timings and a countdown timer by zip code here: \nhttps://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/eclipse-2024/where-when/ \nFor persons interested in experimenting with photographing the eclipse\, please be aware that you MUST obtain the proper solar filter for your camera equipment\, otherwise you will permanently damage your equipment. Use the links above to find a suitable filter for your specific equipment. With a proper filter in place over the objective-end of your camera\, it will be possible to image the Sun. Expect the image scale to be virtually the same as photographing the moon\, so plan for a sufficient size lens. For scale\, take test photos of the moon. Use a tripod and get used to having to adjust the positioning of the Moon as the Earth rotates. If you like the scale\, next take photos of the Sun using the solar filter. You will find it is difficult to line up and find the Sun with the filter in place. Use the shadow of the camera on the ground to assist in lining up. For more tips\, or to troubleshoot\, write us at astronomy@lymelandtrust.org. \nCheck back here for additional information and updates. \nClear skies!

SUMMARY:January 24\, 2024: A World Without Dark Skies: How Light Pollution is Impacting Humans and Ecosystems\, and What You Can Do
DESCRIPTION:Registration appreciated: education@lymelandtrust.org \nJoin Misha Semenov-Leiva and Alan Sheiness for a presentation to learn about light pollution in the Connecticut River Valley. Find out about the effects of an artificially brightened night sky\, including the effects on natural cycles in aquatic and terrestrial life. Alan will talk about his love of astronomy and the wonder of the dark night sky unaffected by artificial light. Misha will open our eyes to the many ways light pollution affects the flora\, fauna\, and our health; and present simple site lighting design changes that can thwart impact while promoting safety. \nAlan Sheiness is founder of the Lyme Land Trust Astronomy program\, which holds regular public astronomy observing sessions. He is a promoter of dark skies and amateur astrophotographer. \nMisha Semenov-Leiva is a board member of the CT River Gateway Commission. SUMMARY:January 5\, 2024 Astronomy Observing Session
DESCRIPTION:CHANGED: If we get clear skies Friday\, we should be able to observe several prominent winter-sky nebulae as well as Jupiter and Saturn. I will also attempt to land the 14” telescope on Comet 144P/Kushida. I admit in advance that I haven’t previewed it so I’m not at all sure if it can be captured! \nJupiter is high in the southern sky as darkness sets in and Saturn is advancing closer to the western horizon. Orion\, Gemini and Taurus are now high in the southeastern sky. The Big Dipper remains below Polaris\, obscured by the tree line. \nWe have several different telescopes that are on display including a 14″ Schmidt-Cassegrain housed in a permanent observatory. Inside the observatory\, you can watch deep sky objects grow in detail and full color on a wall-mounted monitor. Public sessions are co-facilitated by one or more of our talented cohort enthusiasts: \n\nMark Borton\nRoger Charbonneau\, Jr\nJon Dean\nJay Drew\nScott Mallory\nJohn Natale\nParag Sahasrabudhe\nAlan Sheiness\n\nYoung or old\, experienced or totally unfamiliar\, we look forward to exposing you to our uniquely dark skies here in Lyme. Upon registration you will receive a link to directions and observing session guidelines. For questions or comments\, please contact us at astronomy@lymelandtrust.org. \nClear skies! \nPS \nIf you like these programs and you are not currently a Lyme Land Trust Member\, please consider joining us using the green Become A Member link at the top of the LLT page.

SUMMARY:Meteor POP-UP Dec 13 Astronomy Session
DESCRIPTION:The Geminids peak the next two nights\, and we have a clear sky with no moon. It will be FREEZING out and meteor observing means sit in a chair\, so… bundle up\, and bring a chair. I will also place an object or two in the observatory telescope\, too\, to observe one or more planets and other objects of interest. \nThe Geminids appear to emanate from the constellation Gemini. Our Earth is plowing through a debris field left behind by the intersecting orbit of an asteroid\, 3200 Phaethon. As we plow through the debris\, the little particles burn up in our atmosphere. At this time of year\, the constellation Gemini is what is directly behind the debris field\, and hence it seems as if the meteors come from Gemini. Viewing will begin around 7:30pm\, but the later you view\, the better the show. You are welcome to sit out here as late as you wish\, but you will have just as good a show at home as long as you have a reasonable view to the east. \nYoung or old\, experienced or totally unfamiliar\, we look forward to exposing you to our uniquely dark skies here in Lyme.

SUMMARY:Oct 14 Partial Solar Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:=Registration Not Required= \nCome watch the moon take a small bite out of the corner of the Sun as it passes between the Sun and the Earth. Unfortunately for us\, this eclipse will be nowhere near full but we will watch the event unfold safely on a monitor that will be fed live images from a telescope fitted with a special solar filter. Learn what causes a solar eclipse and what it would look like from space peering down at the Earth\, too. Here is a resource about the eclipse and related information: https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/eclipses/2023/oct-14-annular/where-when \nPS \nIf you like these programs and you are not currently a Lyme Land Trust Member\, please consider joining us using the green Become A Member link at the top of the LLT page.
