SUMMARY:Fighting Climate Change via Your Personal Landscape by Tom Christopher
DESCRIPTION:All the challenges of climate change\, from global warming to mass extinctions\, demand a fundamental change in how we relate to Nature\, and there is no better laboratory for learning this than your own backyard. Ecological gardener and podcaster Tom Christopher describes how the way you interact with the plants\, soil\, and wildlife in that personal landscape can have a significant impact on the health of the local ecosystem while also making your home habitat more vibrant\, colorful\, and rewarding. What you experience there will also inform your understanding of the regional and global situation and equip you to become a leader in your community. \nBio: \nTom Christopher is a graduate of the New York Botanical Garden’s School of Professional Gardening and the author of more than a dozen books about gardening\, including the award-winning Garden Revolution: How Our Landscapes Can Be a Source of Environmental Change. He gardens in Connecticut of the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts\, and is the producer of Growing Greener\, a weekly podcast and syndicated radio program about environmentally informed gardening. He was the recipient of the Garden Club of America’s 2021 Sarah Chapman Francis Medal for outstanding literary achievement.

SUMMARY:Crazy Weather\, Kooky Climate\, Carbon Dioxide: What is Going on? By Dr Maureen Raymo
DESCRIPTION:The Earth is running a fever.  The ongoing pollution of our atmosphere with the invisible\, odorless gases carbon dioxide and methane are trapping heat at the Earth’s surface and causing temperatures to rise.  The polar regions are warming fastest of all\, and melting ice sheets are causing sea levels to rise around the globe.  In this talk\, I will review evidence for climate change\, discuss how climate affects extreme weather events\, and share thoughts on how the collective actions of individuals\, families\, communities\, and governments will shape our quality of life in the 21st century. \nMaureen Raymo\, a Lyme resident\, is a scientist who studies how Earth’s climate and sea level have changed over millions of years. Her research has helped put today’s climate change in perspective—and shows why understanding the past matters for decisions we make now.  She is committed to bridging the gap between science and everyday life through public education; she is a founding dean of the Columbia University Climate School and was the founding Director of the Lamont-Doherty Hudson River Field Station\, a community education center on the Hudson River in Piermont NY.  Through her work\, Raymo helps connect scientific research with the communities\, voters\, and decision-makers shaping our climate and our children’s future.
