Land Trust Receives Funding for Fishway Repair and Improvement

Ralph Lewis represented the Land Trust at an August 9, 2005, event recognizing the LIS License Plate Fund recipients. Linda Bireley represented the Land Trust at an August 23, 2005, event recognizing Long Island Sound Communities grant recipients.

The Lyme Land Trust was awarded funding from several state and federal agencies to support repairs and improvements to the Moulson Pond Fishway. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Long Island Sound Community Stewardship Grants Program provided $45,000 through the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Long Island Sound Futures Fund. The Connecticut DEP provided $13,900 through the Long Island Sound License Plate fund.

Linda Bireley explained, “The Lyme Land Trust will repair and make improvements to a fishway that restored upstream access to a river blocked since colonial times. This will maintain and enhance the restoration of migratory fish to the entire Eightmile River Watershed, which is currently being considered for designation under the Federal Wild and Scenic Program.” She added, “We are grateful for the support provided by these agencies, a local landowner and a committed cadre of volunteer monitors.” The repairs were completed in October 2005 and the other improvements will be made in 2006.
